This is a great activity to get your students practicing their measuring skills as they explore objects in the outdoors (can also be done indoors). It’s a very simple activity that is great fun and easy to prepare. For this measuring activity give each child, pair, or small groups a 1 meter bit of string. Get them to go around outside and use the string to measure different items. They can complete the table by drawing or writing the objects they find that are bigger than or less than 1 meter. It’s good to demonstrate how to effectively use the string to help them measure. Subtraction boards are a fun and practical way for your early learners to practice simple subtraction outside. For this activity they will complete the differentiated questions by collecting the correct amount of objects (shown above question) to represent the subtraction and placing it over the top of the square. Once they have completed all four subtractions on the board you can get them to take a photo for a record or write out the subtractions with pictures and answers on some paper. This activity is a great physical and visual way to help them understand subtraction in a concrete way. It’s best to either laminate the boards or print them out on thick card so they can be used multiple times. A fun data handling focused maths investigation to get your children hands on learning in the outdoors. The children will race snails in order to collect some simple data that they will use to create a line-graph before analysing the data and answering a few questions. Two sets of pair cards to help children learn how to read one and four quadrant coordinates grids. They can be used in a variety of ways as a whole class, in pairs, or individually. We find them very effective a exit cards or even a fun extension activity for those early finishers. Here are two ways that we have used them successfully: Game 1: Give each of the children 1 card, get them to walk around and find the other person with the matching card. How quickly can they do it? Game 2: In pairs, put all of the cards face down on the table. Take it in turns turning over two cards to try and find a matching pair. The person with the most pairs at the end is the winner. Start your math lessons outdoors with this FREE fun activity where your class will get into groups following different criteria, for example getting into even numbered groups. This activity works well if you get the students running around until they hear a whistle (or similar), they must then stop and wait for the instructions before getting into the correctly sized groups.
